WATER LILIES are always a pleasure to photograph. I enjoy playing with the contrast between their beautiful, colorful petals against the dark surrounding waters.
There are approximately seventy species of water lilies in the Nymphaeaceae family of flowering plants. They root in soil of the pond with their leaves and flowers floating on the surface.
Some scientist believe water lilies date to the Early Cretaceous Period between 115 to 125 million years ago.

The Blue Water Lily is the national flower of Sri Lanka. The White Water Lily is the national flower of Bangladesh.
The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera) was once thought to be a water lily, however, is now recognized in its own Proteales order in the Nelumbonaceae family.
