Whenever I see HELICONIA, I'm reminded of the lush, tropical rain forests of Hawaii. I was pleasantly surprise to learn most Heliconias are native to the Tropical Americas from Southern Mexico to Peru. There are over 190 species of Heliconias in the Heliconiaceae Family. A few species are indigenous to Samoa and other islands in the Pacific.
What most people consider the "flower" is actually a group of colorful bracts or specialized leaves. The true Heliconia flowers are quite small and slightly hidden within these bracts. Heliconias are tropical plants related to gingers and grow from similar underground system of rhizomes.
