I'm fascinated by the variety of colors, shapes and sizes of grasses. Grasses are part of the Poaceae or Gramineae family. The Poaceae is the fifth largest plant family consisting of 12,000 species of plants, including bamboos, sugarcane, turf or lawn grasses, cereal and natural grasses. These cereal grain grasses include staple foods such as rice, oats, rye, maize (corn), wheat, barley, millet and sorghum.
Scientists have uncovered fossilized dinosaur dung containing ancient grasses dating back 65-million years ago and related to modern rice and bamboo.
Grasses are found on every continent and are only absent from Antartica to Central Greenland. It is estimated that 20% of Earth's vegetation consists of savannahs and prairie grasslands.
