SIERRA REDWOODS (Sequoiadendron Giganteum), the only living species of the genus Sequoiadendron, are the largest trees on Earth. Some old sequoias were measured at 311 feet tall and 56 feet in diameter. These giant sequoias grow naturally only in groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Interesting Notes:
The oldest known Giant Sequoia based on ring count was 3,500 years old. The General Sherman Tree is still growing in Sequoia National Park and is over 2,500 years old.
