 ASIATIC MAGNOLIA Portfolio

I enjoy photographing the all of the different types of MAGNOLIA flowers in the botanical gardens.   Magnolias are beautiful flowering trees native to east and southeast Asia.  They are an ancient genus of over 200 species of flowering plants in the family Magnoliaceae.

Plants from this family were found in 95 million year old fossil records and have survived through the ice ages, continental drifts and other geologic events.    Since the oldest known bee fossil was discovered in a piece of amber 80 million years old,  scientists theorize magnolia flowers developed tough carpels to avoid damage from pollinating beetles.
